Meet the Team - Shaun Duncan | The Cairn

If you visit the distillery then you may meet our Visitor Experience Host, Shaun Duncan. A lover of Marcus Aurelius quotes (ask him!) and the stunning Cairngorm scenery, in this latest 'Meet our Team' blog we delve into what made Shaun want to work at The Cairn.

What made you decide to work at The Cairn?

Growing up in Aberdeenshire, I always dreamed of a more outdoorsy lifestyle. After finishing university with a degree in Software Development, I moved to Grantown-on-Spey and landed a job in a local hotel. I fell in love with the area and the number of activities to do here, particularly kayaking and walking in the mountains.

Through my previous role, I'd discovered a love for whisky, so jumped at the chance to work at The Cairn as soon as they began hiring!

What do you like best about your job?

I enjoy teaching people about how our spirit is made, the history behind Gordon & MacPhail, and of course being able to sample our newest CRN57° blended malts. My current favourite whiskies are the CRN57° 18 and 30 year olds - both are rich and spicy, full of fruit flavours and thoroughly enjoyable.

The Cairn is an inspirational place - what has it encouraged you to do?

It has inspired me to continue learning more about whisky and the industry as a whole, and has also encouraged me to continue on my own journey - I altered my path to ensure I was following my dreams and doing what I really loved, The Cairn keeps me motivated to continue this.

What do you like to do in your own time?

Hiking, camping, kayaking - all the outdoor activities, that's why I moved here! I also enjoy cooking and baking and I've also been making my own jams and chutneys recently.

As well as visiting the distillery, what would you recommend people do in the Cairngorms?

If you, like me, are into long walks and wildlife, then look no further than the Anagach Woods here in Grantown - there's an abundance of birds to spot, and the odd red squirrel if you are quick! Working at The Cairn has given me greater knowledge of the local producers on our doorstop too, on our menu you'll find a range of dishes, with all ingredients sourced as locally as possible. I think it's important to use local producers and suppliers at home too, then you know exactly what you are getting and it's usually of greater quality too.
